OpenAI’s acquisition of Windsurf has been canceled. Instead, Google will hire Windsurf’s CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and some of its R&D employees to join the Google DeepMind team. They will focus on agentic coding efforts, primarily working on Gemini. Google will not gain control or a stake in Windsurf but will obtain a non-exclusive license to some of its technology. Jeff Wang, Windsurf’s head of business, becomes interim CEO, and Graham Moreno, its VP of global sales, becomes president. Google expressed excitement about advancing its work in agentic coding with the new talent, while Mohan and Chen look forward to contributing to Google DeepMind. The financial details of the hiring were not disclosed, though OpenAI was previously reported to be acquiring Windsurf for $3 billion.
