‘Attack everything’: Russia-linked hackers claim they knocked OpenAI offline this week

A hacking group called Anonymous Sudan, believed to be linked to Russia, has claimed responsibility for launching attacks on OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The group targeted OpenAI due to its alleged support of Israel. OpenAI reported periodic outages of its chatbot, attributing them to a distributed denial of service attack. ChatGPT is a widely used artificial intelligence platform with around 100 million users per week. Anonymous Sudan presents itself as a hacktivist group fighting for oppressed Muslims globally, but cybersecurity researchers believe it is connected to Russia and acts in line with Kremlin’s interests. OpenAI has not identified the source of the attack, and the claims made by Anonymous Sudan could not be independently verified. The issue has been resolved by OpenAI, which experienced high error rates across its software and AI platform. Anonymous Sudan has a history of carrying out high-profile DDoS attacks, targeting various organizations including Microsoft, NATO, and media companies. Prior to the Israel-Hamas conflict, the group claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli organizations, including news outlets, government agencies, and universities.
