Amazon has announced an additional $4 billion investment in Anthropic, an AI startup founded by former OpenAI executives, bringing its total investment to $8 billion while remaining a minority stakeholder. As part of this partnership, Amazon Web Services (AWS) will become Anthropic’s primary cloud and training partner, utilizing AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips for AI model deployment. Anthropic is known for its Claude chatbot, which competes with other popular AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. This collaboration will also provide AWS customers with early access to a feature allowing them to fine-tune Claude with their own data.
Amazon’s previous investments included $2.75 billion earlier this year and an initial $1.25 billion in September 2023. Despite its significant financial involvement, Amazon does not hold a seat on Anthropic’s board. Recently, Anthropic achieved a milestone with its AI models being able to perform complex tasks on computers, mimicking human interaction. Early users of this capability included companies like Asana, Canva, and Notion. Anthropic has been expanding its product offerings, including the launch of Claude Enterprise and the more powerful Claude 3.5 Sonnet. Additionally, Google has previously invested $2 billion in Anthropic, securing a 10% stake and a substantial cloud contract.
