OpenAI has introduced a new subscription plan, ChatGPT Pro, priced at $200 per month, offering unlimited access to all its models, including the enhanced o1 reasoning model. Designed for power users, this model checks its own work, improving accuracy in tasks like math, programming, and writing, although it may take longer to generate answers. The upgraded o1 model now includes image reasoning capabilities and has shown a 34% reduction in major errors compared to its preview version. While o1 is accessible to all paid ChatGPT users, Pro subscribers will benefit from a more powerful version called o1 pro mode, which provides more accurate responses, especially in complex fields.
OpenAI plans to integrate o1 into its API with new features, including function calling and image analysis, with further updates expected. ChatGPT Pro, significantly more expensive than ChatGPT Plus, may appeal only to dedicated users, especially as many view existing plans as costly. OpenAI also announced grants for medical researchers to access ChatGPT Pro for free. The pricing strategy reflects investor pressure to address financial losses, with OpenAI anticipating a $5 billion loss this year despite generating substantial monthly revenue. ChatGPT continues to be a major revenue source for OpenAI, boasting over 300 million weekly active users.
