Duet AI for Developers, Google’s GitHub Copilot competitor, is now generally available and will soon use the Gemini model

Google has announced the general availability of Duet AI for Developers, a suite of AI-powered tools for code completion and generation. The company plans to incorporate its powerful Gemini model into the platform in the near future. In a unique approach, Google has partnered with 25 companies, including Confluent, HashiCorp, and MongoDB, to provide datasets for training the AI to assist developers in building and troubleshooting applications. Some partners will contribute data for code completion and generation, while others will provide documentation and knowledge sources for the chat experience. The goal is to help development and ops teams with tasks such as test automation, issue resolution, and vulnerability remediation. Google aims to eliminate repetitive tasks and improve coding with the help of AI. The model is trained on the latest cloud-native practices and integrated into popular IDEs and the Google Cloud Console. Duet AI for Developers is considered an enterprise-grade product with access controls and an indemnification guarantee. While Google acknowledges that these tools won’t replace coding skills, they aim to enhance developer productivity. The platform currently supports over 20 languages and offers features like log summarization, error explanation, and one-click shortcuts for tasks. Until January 2024, Duet AI for Developers is available for free, after which it will cost $19 per user per month with an annual commitment.
