IBM, Intel, Sony Group, Dell, and Meta, along with universities, tech startups, and foundations, have formed an AI Alliance to challenge the dominance of OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon in the field of artificial intelligence. The alliance aims to address the limited focus on a few institutions in AI discussions and promote a more inclusive approach. OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have kept their AI models proprietary, leading to concerns in the research community and among competitors. The AI Alliance advocates for open-source models and collaboration in AI development. The group has set objectives such as creating common frameworks for evaluating AI algorithms, investing in AI research funds, and collaborating on open-source projects. Participants include chip manufacturers AMD and Cerebras, AI startups like Hugging Face and Stability AI, and Ivy League universities. IBM has committed $100 million to support AI research projects and has collaborated with Meta on an open-source toolkit for AI development. The alliance is still working on governance details and may establish an external nonprofit organization.
