OpenAI has requested assistance from the Trump administration to shield AI companies from various proposed state regulations, suggesting that if these companies voluntarily share their models with the federal government, they could receive relief from state rules. In a recent policy proposal, OpenAI highlighted that the increasing number of AI-related bills threatens technological progress in the U.S., especially amid competition from China. OpenAI’s vice president, Chris Lehane, indicated that the U.S. AI Safety Institute could facilitate communication between the government and the private sector, offering liability protections in exchange for compliance with federal oversight.
The organization also emphasized the need for federal support in AI infrastructure investments and called for copyright reform to maintain American leadership in the field. OpenAI argued that without fair use access to data, U.S. companies risk falling behind their Chinese counterparts. Additionally, the company proposed that AI firms be granted access to government-held data, such as healthcare information, to enhance AI development. The recommendations were part of OpenAI’s response to a public input request from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, as the administration aims to establish a new AI policy framework.
