Microsoft has introduced Recall for Copilot Plus PCs, a new tool for Windows 11 that tracks and records everything done on the computer, allowing users to search and retrieve past activities. This tool, internally known as AI Explorer, logs app usage, live meeting communications, website visits, and more, presenting a contextual snapshot of the memory when prompted. The feature resembles Windows 10’s Timeline but with more advanced capabilities and is native to Windows 11, unlike the third-party app Rewind for Mac. Recall requires a Copilot Plus PC with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chips and a minimum of 256 GB of storage, with 50 GB available for Recall’s use. Users can control the Recall index, pausing, stopping, or deleting captured content, and excluding specific apps or websites. Microsoft assures that the Recall index remains local and private on the device, and it does not capture InPrivate web browsing sessions or DRM-protected content. However, it does not perform content moderation and will not actively hide sensitive information like passwords and financial account numbers.
