Microsoft Hires Sam Altman to Head New AI Research Team

Microsoft has hired Sam Altman, the recently ousted CEO of OpenAI, to lead a new advanced artificial intelligence research team. Altman stepped down from OpenAI due to a breakdown in communication with the board of directors. The board cited a lack of consistent candor from Altman as the reason for his departure. OpenAI’s small board, which includes members linked to the AI-skeptical effective altruism movement, expressed concerns about the company’s rapid expansion. Altman’s supporters within OpenAI and investors pushed for his return, with Microsoft also lobbying for his reinstatement. Microsoft is one of OpenAI’s largest shareholders, holding a 49% stake in the company. Greg Brockman, co-founder and former chairman of OpenAI’s board, will also join Altman at Microsoft.
