A.I. start-up Anthropic has announced the completion of a fund-raising deal that values the company at $61.5 billion, a significant increase from its previous valuation of $16 billion just over a year ago. The new funding round, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, will inject an additional $3.5 billion into the company. Since its inception in 2021, Anthropic has raised more than $14.8 billion from various venture firms and major tech players including Amazon and Google.
This surge in valuation comes amid increased funding activity within the artificial intelligence sector, with competitors like OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI also pursuing substantial financing rounds. OpenAI is set to complete a $40 billion deal that would elevate its valuation to $300 billion, while xAI is negotiating a round that could value it at $75 billion.
Anthropic, co-founded by Dario Amodei and his sister Daniela, focuses on developing A.I. technologies with safety measures. The company has garnered attention for its chatbot, Claude, and aims to balance the potential benefits and risks associated with A.I. technology. Despite a temporary cooling of investor enthusiasm in 2024, interest has rebounded as companies like Anthropic continue to advance their A.I. capabilities.
