OpenAI has released a first-of-its-kind study revealing how people are using ChatGPT for everyday tasks. The study, based on 1.5 million conversations, found that 73% of messages were non-work related as of June 2025, indicating ChatGPT’s integration into various aspects of life. Key uses included practical guidance, seeking information, and writing, with practical guidance being the most common. Writing tasks dominated work-related messages, often involving editing and translating existing text. The study categorized usage into ‘Asking,’ ‘Doing,’ and ‘Expressing,’ with ‘Asking’ being the most prevalent for general use, while ‘Doing’ was more common in work contexts. ChatGPT’s user base has grown to 10% of the world’s adult population, with demographic shifts showing increased adoption among women and in low- and middle-income countries. Despite competition from rivals like XAI and Google’s Gemini, ChatGPT remains widely used, with its enterprise products and API access contributing to its versatility.
